• Spotlight on Broadway: New York's first-known professional musical production was a five performance run of John Gay's satirical British ballad opera The Beggar's Opera, at the Nassau Street Theatre on December 3, 1750. From this modest beginning, the history and development of what we now regard as " Broadway" have mirrored the cultural, historic, economic, and political evolution of the United States of America as a developing democracy.
